Counseling is an applied psychology that can be used to help people gain control of their feelings and thoughts. In sum, working with a counselor can help provide insight, support, and new strategies for all types of life challenges.
What can I expect in a counseling session?
Every therapy session is confidential, unique, and tailored to each individual and their specific goals. It is common to plan a series of weekly sessions, where each session lasts 60 minutes. Depending on the issue(s) more than one session per week may be needed. Therapy can be short-term, focusing on a specific issue or longer-term, addressing more complex issues or ongoing personal growth. There may be times when you are asked to take certain actions outside of the therapy sessions, such as journaling or keeping records to track certain behaviours. For therapy to be most effective you must be an active participant, both during and between the sessions.
